Classroom Teaching Practices that Support Struggling Adolescent Readers

Who: Classroom teachers (all contents areas), Intervention Specialists & Curriculum Leaders,  Grade Five and above 

What: Secondary educators face unique challenges supporting struggling older students as they adjust to increasing content-specific learning requirements and differing teaching approaches. Adding to the challenges, most content area teachers received limited preparation on reading processes and supports. Using practice briefs from the Institute of Education Sciences and Center on Instruction, this two-part series will focus on classroom wide, Tier One interventions that will support all students, especially those with significant gaps in reading achievement. The topics addressed include: the adolescent reader; word study; fluency; vocabulary; comprehension, the use of stretch texts, and motivation. This course is appropriate for all teachers across the content areas working with adolescent learners (Grade 5 and up). 

When & Where: 10/21 & 2/10,  8:30 AM - 3:00 PM; Auburn TLC,  Room 106

Cost:  $25 per person for any school district located in Lake or Geauga County

$50 per person for districts located outside of Lake or Geauga County
